Pictures, video and audio

How each Bynder field behaves in the editor, and how to skip the file-version step for pictures.

Pictures

By default the picker for Bynder Picture has two steps: choose the asset, then choose which file version of it to use (the original, a web image, and so on). The URL of that file is stored.

To let editors pick the whole asset in one step, open the field in the Content-Type Builder, go to Advanced settings, and tick Disable derivative selection. The plugin then stores the asset’s web image, or its original file when there is no web image.

Video

Bynder Video always selects the whole asset. The stored URL is the asset’s original file. The form shows a player so the editor can check the choice.

If a video file is not playable in a browser (some professional formats are not), pick or create a web-friendly version in Bynder.

Audio and documents

Bynder Audio and Bynder Document work the same way: whole-asset selection, original file URL stored. Audio shows a player in the form, documents show a link.

One asset or several

Every picture, video, audio and document field can hold one asset or several. Tick Allow several assets in the field’s advanced settings, in the Content-Type Builder. That works for each of the four fields, so a page can have a list of videos or documents as well as pictures.

Left unticked, the field behaves as described above. Ticked, the picker opens in multi-select mode, so an editor ticks as many assets as they want and adds them in one go. The same list tools apply to all four types:

  • Pictures show a thumbnail and an Alt text box for each image. Videos show their first frame, audio shows a small player, and documents show a link.
  • Reorder with the up and down arrows. The site shows them in this order.
  • Remove an asset with the bin. It stays untouched in Bynder.
  • Limit the number with Maximum number of assets. Assets beyond the limit are not added, and the button is disabled when the field is full.

An asset already in the list is not added twice. A field that already held one URL keeps it as the first item of the list when you switch it to several. What the API returns is described in Stored value.

To render a list on your site, see Show assets on your site.

Clearing a value

Each field shows a bin button on its preview. It empties the field. The asset stays untouched in Bynder.

Video from Bynder or from a URL

Some content types need either an asset from Bynder or an external link (for example a YouTube video). Strapi can show one field or the other with a conditional visibility rule on the field, so editors see only the field that applies.
