Stored value

What a Bynder field saves in Strapi and what the API returns.

A Bynder field saves one URL as text, or a list when it allows several assets. It holds the address of the file the editor chose in Bynder. Strapi stores no binary and no thumbnail for it.

Field URL that is stored
Picture, file-version step on The file version the editor selected
Picture, disableDerivatives on The asset’s web image, or its original file when it has none
Video, audio, document The asset’s original file

The REST API returns it like any text field:

{ "data": { "cover": "https://your-company.getbynder.com/transform/<asset-id>/campaign-hero" } }

Several assets

A picture, video, audio or document field with Allow several assets ticked saves a list. The column is plain text, so the list is saved as JSON text, and the public API returns it as a real list:

{
  "data": {
    "images": [
      {
        "url": "https://your-company.getbynder.com/transform/<asset-id>/campaign-hero",
        "name": "campaign-hero",
        "alt": "A marketing team around a launch calendar"
      }
    ]
  }
}
  • Pictures carry an alt that editors can change. Video, audio and documents carry url and name.
  • Existing values keep working. A field that held one URL before it allowed several still returns that URL as a plain string until an editor picks again. Read either shape, a string or a list.
  • The admin forms and the Strapi Document Service see the saved text, because only the public API (REST and GraphQL) turns it into a list. If you write to such a field yourself, send the list as JSON text.

What this means

  • Replace or retire an asset in Bynder and the URL in Strapi may stop working. Keep an eye on assets that are in use before removing them.
  • Alt text, captions and rights are not part of the value. Store them in your own fields.
  • Resizing is done by asking Bynder for another rendition of the same asset. See Show assets on your site.
